Whitchurch Hockey Club Race Night

On Saturday 25th February, Whitchurch Hockey Club hosted a race night social. This event was organised by the Ladies 1s as a fundraiser for their trip to Europe later in the season. Once the format of the night was explained by our host Mark, we all placed our first bets. The old-school videos with funny commentary on a range of horse races then followed, with the suspense growing towards the end of each race, as people got more into the betting and more money started to be at stake. With around 50 people attending, the betting table was always busy! The first 7 races had horses that were named by club members, friends and family, including Lewis Lightning, Italian Stallion and Clippity Clop. These races included the Agile Therapy Pen-Y-Lan Chase (sponsored by Agile Therapy), Rampant Rappo’s Romp (sponsored by Pro Copy), Stroud Hedgehunter Derby (sponsored by Stroud Automotive Services), the Champion Custard Stakes (sponsored by Preston Skirrow) and the Olsen Fitness Pony Trot (sponsored by Olsen Fitness).

The 8th race (Blighty’s Benchwarmer Chase, sponsored by Pro Copy) was one for the losers of other races, where all the losing tickets from the previous 7 races were collected and jockeys were picked from these. With no bets being taken for this race, it was all on the jockeys selected! The final race was also a bit different, with the horses up for sale on the night, with a larger cash prize for the winning owner of the TB Davies Gold cup (sponsored by TB Davies).
