Whitchurch vs Cardiff & Met A - Match Report 10th October 15'

Result: Whitchurch 0 - 3 Cardiff and Met A

Coming off the back of two defeats in which the score didn't reflect the effort put in, Whitchurch travelled over to the arch rivals Cardiff for an early derby game.

Still without skipper Phill Wilkinson, whose 30-day ban reaching its second game, Andy Hughes stepped into the armband for this encounter and his pure bulk in the Whitchurch net would prove vital to keeping the travelling side in the game.

Under pressure from the off, a young Whitchurch side coped well, with Jolyon le Morgan proving again why his stock continues to rise with deft touches and controlled movement.

Possession ebbed and flowed during the first half with Cardiff flashing balls across the D to no effect. Whitchurch too had their chances with Jake Joyce wasting a three-on-one, going for a glory ball when the easy option was begging to be taken.

After a brief scare with a Cardiff short corner, which Hughes turned away with ease, the whistle blew and the sides went in with mixed feelings about the 0-0 scoreline.

Cardiff upped the tempo in the second period, with the Whitchurch backline put under increasing pressure. Unable to soak up this pressure, Whitchurch conceded a series of short corners, with Hughes denying the Cardiff attackers' attempts on goal.

But even the solid form of Hughes could do nothing to stop Cardiff's first goal as, with Whitchurch reduced to three players defending the corner after Tommy Harris was sent to halfway for an early break, a drag flick smashed into the post and fell kindly for a one touch follow-up from Cardiff's second runner.

Galvanised, Whitchurch sent foray after foray into Cardiff's half with new father Doug Young leading the charge, but the final pass was still missing and le Morgan couldn't get his stick on the end of a flashing cross and Cardiff could ease the pressure.

Once more Cardiff rallied and won another short, this time the ball bobbling over Hughes and Chris King unable to pick the spinning ball, watching helpless as it tickled the back board for 2-0.

Devoid of energy, Whitchurch struggled to retain the ball and could do nothing as a Cardiff ball was well dealt with by Hughes initially before the ball ballooned into the air and a smart pick by the Cardiff attacker was smuggled over the Whitchurch line.

With Whitchurch out on their feet and Cardiff happy to sit back on their lead, the final whistle, leaving the final score 3-0 and Whitchurch yet to pick up a point in the early season outings.
