Whitchurch & A's v Westbury & UB Match Report 12th Sept 15'

Result: Westbury & UB 1-3 Whitchurch

On a sunny day at the sand base in bristol, Whitchurch, with a mix of first and second team personnel, started the game well with the ball moved around with pace and into the midfield from the defence.

Trying to implement a high press led to a bit of a lack of structure in the Whitchurch ranks and allowed Westbury into the game. Despite this some good work from Rhodri Ryland earned Whitchurch a couple of short corners which weren't up to standard.

Westbury maintained a good defensive structure and looked to absorb the pressure from Whitchurch and then spring a counter attack. These attacks were nullified well by Chris King and Ben Thomas and the 2 short corners that Westbury did manage to win led to nothing.

Whitchurch's poor passing was costing them dearly in this half with the team struggling on a sandy, unpredictable surface and in turn this led to too many players dribbling the ball too much.

After a brief hairdryer at half time in which the captain reminded the players this wasn't an afternoon stroll, Whitchurch came out strongly in the second half and made some good runs into the opposition 25. After winning some free hits the ball was taken quickly by Matt Weasley, fed into JJ Okocha and after a deft touch from Luke Miller, Phill Wilkinson was on hand at the back post to gratefully grab the opener.

Happy with scoring, Whitchurch switched off and allowed Westbury some possession higher up the pitch. A stray pass from a Whitchurch defender was taken by Westbury to slide it under Adam Broomfield in goal. 1-1.

Whitchurch then assured themselves upon the game with a swift counter attack that saw Wilkinson feed Ben Thomas, who found Jolyon Hufflepuff, who buried a hit into the far corner.

With some more good counter work Whitchurch were looking threatening and Wilkinson took a quick free hit. This caught Westbury by surprise and he was able to find the backboard from the top of the D.

We then thought the game was soon to finish so we all went to sleep and let Adam Broomfield make 4 top class saves with Rory Gorman standing firm at centre back.

Many positives from the game with some great performances from Chris King and Nemanja Hunt. A tough week of training ahead to right the wrongs.
