Match Report Sat 4th Oct Whitchurch Saints 1st XI v Dowlais 1st XI

This was the first home game of the season for Saints 1st XI against newly promoted Dowlais. The intent and intensity from the whistle by Saints was evident through an opening goal which occurred within minutes with Claire decisively scoring her first Saints goal. This pressure was maintained with the restart being easily turned over again by Saints yielding a second goal through Kath and a third this time by Niagiving Saints cause to celebrate further.

With 3 goals in the first quarter of the game Dowlais must have been expecting an onslaught. However Saints perhaps losing concentration allowed Dowlais to regroup and reorganise their defense. In a switch to the right Noelle found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time as a Dowlais miss-hit saw the ball collide with her chin minutes from half time. With the wounded looking after the wounded Liv Laxton was on hand to escort Noelle to A & E for a ‘quick’ repair job.

Following a determined half time team talk with Greg, Saints were keen to maximise their goal count . Both attack and midfield, with tireless running from Lauren and Kath in BOD and TOD, worked hard to maintain pressure on a frustrated Dowlais defense who struggled to find a way through the Saints press. The defense, when they did have the ball, used the width provided by Meg, Lucy and Julie to maximise space for outletting, Lucy using her trademark aerials to quickly undo any ground Dowlais did manage to make on the left.

Despite their best efforts the second half only yielded one more goal by way of Kath who clinching her second of the game.

A solid performance by the Saints 1st XI earning them 3 more points.
