Hello All,

Firstly, what a good season (for most), we have had.  Two teams promoted and only two teams relegated.

In summary:

1s: Congratulations to Douglas, Graham and the 1st team who got back into the EHL.  Done in dramatic style by beating Cardiff & Met 2s on the last day of the season, with the very last hit of the game- very satisfying. You made a 32 year old balding man very happy, thank you.

2s: The twos only managed 4 points this year however their availability and commitment was never in doubt given they had three trips to Exeter and two to Plymouth. I thank you for your attitude and commitment to the club and I am positive next year is going to be a very good year for the twos.

3s: The threes managed to avoid relegation on the last day of the season, albeit of virtue of having a better goal difference. It’s been a tough and strange year for the threes and we have struggled due to the lack of availability.  If they are to compete in this division next year a firmer core of the team needs to be established. Thanks to Rappo for the start of the season and Jon for the rest of the season for being captains. I know neither of you really wanted to do it and it was a hard and frustrating season.

4s: Congratulations to Robbie and the fours for bouncing back at the first attempt and gaining promotion this year.

5s The 5s have also struggled to keep a settled side this year and this showed with relegation. However, after Christmas the team did start picking up points and they very nearly survived. Thank you to Jamie and the experienced players for trying to add stability. The 5s will have a great season next year.

6s: The 6s were also close to the drop but in the end were safe with three games to go. Some good youngsters that will no doubt start working their ways up the Whitchurch teams. Thank you Neil for the past six years as captain I’m sure you’re looking forward to a break.

7s: The 7s were so close to gaining the promotion they so craved for but in the end were piped to the post. Thank you Darryl for your efforts this year.

8s: The 8s are made up of gentleman with vast amounts of experience, plus a dash of youth! Availability has been a slight problem this year with Phil often turning up to selection with only six names! However we got there in the end. They enjoyed a great end of the year with even Phil “one yard” Blight even scoring a goal. Thank you to Phil for captaining for the past 400 years (14) and I hope you enjoy your rest from captaining.

We have the 1s and 3s in their cup competitions on the 3rd/4th May so please come and support these Whitchurch teams, they need your support.

Next year

We are always looking for helpers.  If you can offer any support- however large or small please get in contact with myself or a committee member.

I have captain roles for the 2,3,5,6,7,8s, to fill so if you want to take on a challenge please again get in contact with me.  With no captains there are no games!

I look forward to seeing you at the end of season dinner on the 26th April, where the players of the season will be announced.

Finally, Whitchurch Hockey club is a truly friendly and great club and this is due to all our members. I’m proud to be part of such a successful club and I honestly think we are on our way back to being the best club in Wales and not just the biggest.

Thank you

Adam Place
