Updates from Whitchurch Girls U11, U13 and Thornhill Primary School

WHC U13 Girls Achievements so far . . .

Although this age group is historically large in numbers this season we gained  new heights and had record breaking numbers attend training and play in the match Sundays once a month.  Most Sundays match days we fielded 5 or 6 squads which resulted in half the teams attending one venue and half at the other to enable us to have some of our matches against other clubs.  I would like to thank all the coaches, parents and some of our senior saints players that have helped me make this possible.  Too many names to mention,( but special thanks goes to Caroline Morgan and Chris Despres) without them all there would have been no way for me to field all the players who were available and some players would have missed out.  All the girls have progressed and improved well throughout the season which was clear for all to see in the South Wales Qualifiers and the Reserve competition.

In the reserve competition we fielded 4 teams and were very unlucky not to have an all Whitchurch final with Gwent going through from group B instead of Whitchurch Yellows on goal difference. This seemed harsh for the yellows as they had not lost a match all day and continued their winning ways in the 3rd/4th position match to take 3rd place in the competition.  Whitchurch Blues played Gwent in the final which resulted in 0.0.  Penalty shoot out unfortunately resulted in Whitchurch miss out 2.1 to gain 2nd place on the day.  All teams played extremely well and not only did themselves proud but Whitchurch HC and their friends and family.  Well done girls.

The U13 Girls A teams squad put parents and coaches through a nail biting time with a 0.0 in the playoff match, then it was 1.1 in the penalty shoot out, but thanks to Caitlin scoring and then Goal keeper Lucy saving in the sudden death penalty shoot out the girls were through to the South Wales Cup finals.

In the finals the girls made a very good start winning their first match against Swansea 3.0.  They then played Gwent and although appeared to be the stronger team were unfortunate to let in 1 goal from a short corner to lose 1.0.   They next played Brecon and this time dominated the match and scored some very well worked goals to win 3.0.  All the girls show brilliant skills, determination and sportpersonship in the South Wales Cup finals and were worthy runners up. They now have the Welsh Cup Final to look forward to.  We are all very proud of you girls and wish you every success in the finals.

WHC U11 Girls Achievements so far . . .

The U11 girls A team successfully qualified for the South Wales Cup on the same day which saw their whole age group play some very good hockey.  WHC had 2 squads in the U11 girls reserve competition with one of our teams gaining 2nd place. Well done girls.

The A team then played outstanding hockey in the South Wales Cup Finals to retain the South Wales Cup for the second year running winning all 3 games, scoring a total of 18 goals and conceding 0. Brilliant hockey played by all. U11's now to play in the Welsh cup finals.

Cardiff Primary Schools Cup

I would also like to congratulate the Whitchurch HC members that played for their school Thornhill Primary in the Cardiff Games Hockey competition.  They were crowned Cardiff Regional Primary school Champions for the second year running.  They won all 4 pool matches (8.0,7.0,7.0,7.0) and then won the final 9.0  =38 Goals For and 0 Against with every squad member scoring 1 or more goals.

Two more Whitchurch HC members also played for Thornhill with other school hockey players in the 6’s competition.  They narrowly missing out on joining the 8’s for the cup double and although played very well unluckily lost 2.1 in the final.  Again all the children involved showed brilliant hockey skills and sportspersonship and Mrs Dartnell and myself ( Mrs Partridge) are very proud coaches.
